چکیده

As the size of electronic and mechanical devices shrinks to the nanometre regime, performance begins to be dominated by surface forces. For example, friction, wear and adhesion are known to be central challenges in the design of reliable microand nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). Because of the complexity of the physical and chemical mechanisms underlying atomic-level tribology, it is still not possible to accurately and reliably predict the response when two surfaces come into contact at the nanoscale. Fundamental scientific studies are the means by which these insights may be gained. We review recent advances in the experimental, theoretical and computational studies of nanotribology. In particular, we focus on the latest developments in atomic force microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations and their application to the study of single-asperity contact. FULL CRITICAL REVIEW In situ single asperity wear at the nanometre scale

The interface of two contacting materials experiences complex physical and possibly chemical reactions when one slides with respect to another. While tribology, a subject studying sliding contact, has been comprehensively elucidated for a variety of materials ranging from metals, carbides, inorganic materials and polymers, direct imaging data of the processes taken place at the nanometre or ato...

Scaling Effects on Materials Tribology: From Macro to Micro Scale

The tribological study of materials inherently involves the interaction of surface asperities at the micro to nanoscopic length scales. This is the case for large scale engineering applications with sliding contacts, where the real area of contact is made up of small contacting asperities that make up only a fraction of the apparent area of contact. This is why researchers have sought to create...

Nanotribology of CoCr–UHMWPE TJR prosthesis using atomic force microscopy

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) submicron wear debris particles in total joint replacement (TJR) prosthesis have been observed clinically to cause osteolysis. In this study, the formation of UHMWPE submicron wear debris was investigated by modeling a nanoscale asperity on the surface of a CoCr femoral component of a total knee replacement (TKR) prosthesis using a Si3N4 AFM com...

Nanotribology of octadecyltrichlorosilane monolayers and silicon: self-mated versus unmated interfaces and local packing density effects.

We use atomic force microscopy (AFM) to determine the frictional properties of nanoscale single-asperity contacts involving octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) monolayers and silicon. Quantitative AFM measurements in the wearless regime are performed using both uncoated and OTS-coated silicon AFM tips in contact with both uncoated and OTS-coated silicon surfaces, providing four pairs of either self-...
